Sustainability

At Northland College, sustainability is all about people. We believe that environmental change requires more than technical knowledge of renewable energy, ecosystems, and sustainable business practices; it demands an exploration of human nature-an exploration of ourselves.

Northland College Website

At NCSA, we are learning to harness our human potential and apply it to the problems of our day. Under the coordination of our Director of Sustainability, NCSA is spearheading new projects to improve our level of sustainability as anorganization and projects that encourage sustainable growth on a larger scale at Northland College and in the greater Chequamegon Bay region. Our organization is active in the strategic planning and vision-setting of Northland through our Director and through our  representatives on Environmental Council.

NCSA’s commitment to sustainability rests in the hands of our students at Northlnad. We, as an orginization, are only as strong as the sum of our parts. The more diverse ideas, complex thoughts, real world thinkers we have the better we can act as an advocate for our planet.

Below are a few examples of how we are currently acting as an advocate for our planet, as well as some future planned projects. Make sure to check out our sustainability events and to stay involved – your voice matters.

Current Projects

 .New Compost Facility

Byron Emmons, the 2009-2010 Director of Sustainability, and the Renewable Energy Fund Committee have approved funding for a new compost facility.  After purchasing the Earth Tub to compost campus’ food waste years ago, the Environmental Council soon realized that the Earth Tub facility was insufficient for winter composting.  The new facility being planned by the campus Master Planning Committee right now will include insulation, heat, water, and ventilation.  It will also include room for a second compost system and a biodiesel processer.  Of course, the building materials and design will follow LEED Silver certification standards. Funding approved totaled $42,000.

Past Projects

Mino Aki Developement

The Renewable Energy Fund Committee also approved funding to further develop the AERC site.  Funding will cover a deer fence and more fruit trees.  The Mino Aki garden club is working to provide more local, sustainably-grown food to the campus cafeteria.
